FAQ

What is a quick release Collar?

A "quick release" collar is a dog collar with a buckle, usually nylon or plastic, that pops open when the sides of the buckle are pressed. The buckle on this type of collar is often referred to as a "side-release" or "snap on" dog collar. A quick release collar is the ideal choice for those that want a perfect fit, unlike the irregular fit of a traditional buckle collar. A quick release dog collar is also lightweight and comfortable for your dog.

What is a Martingale Collar?

A martingale collar is a specialty collar that is used with narrow-headed dogs that can wriggle out of traditional buckle collars when on leash. Martingale collars are also good for use in leash training. The action of the martingale, which tightens around your dog's neck when he/she pulls when on leash, is what prevents your dog from slipping/backing out of the collar. It is also know as a "no-slip," "limited slip," and 'soft-choke" collar. You can learn more about our martingale collars on our Guide to Fitting Martingale Collars page.

What Type of Collar is best for my dog/puppy?

That's a tough one to answer because every dog is different - however it all boils down to three factors: breed, lifestyle and behavior. These factors will determine what type of collar will work best for your dog. Check out our blog article, Guide to choosing the Right Puppy Collar for more information.

How do I select the correct size collar for my dog?

The most accurate way of getting the proper fit for your dogs collar is to measure his/her neck with a soft measuring tape. Another way is to use a strip of paper, and mark the length with a pen/pencil, and then lay the marked paper against a straight rule or ruler. Always remember to add 2 inches to accommodate for hair growth, weight changes, etc.

If your dog is a puppy, add several more inches for growth. You will still likely need an "adult" collar when your pup reaches 4-6 months or so. The larger the breed, the sooner you will need a larger collar for your growing pup!

How do I select the right color collar for my dog?
